Stop Building New Base! Okinawa Residents to Hold Gathering on September 20 with Focus on Cancellation of Approval by New Governor
I see. The chief cabinet has said: “Reclamation plan was approved by the governor, and it is the issue of the past.” Therefore, it turns out that if a new governor cancel it, they cannot do construction work.

Chief
Cabinet Secretary Suga Shows Condition for Stoppage of Building Base in Henoko
Okinawa residents have
been taking action at the risk of their life on the Henoko beach, Nago City,
Okinawa Prefecture to protect the sea in Henoko.
The Japan Coat Guard has reportedly
threatened the citizens acting on high seas and inflicted violence on them.
In the 2010 Okinawa gubernatorial election,
Mr. Hirokazu Nakaima made a promise to Okinawa residents that he would relocate
the Futenma replacement facility to outside the prefecture or outside the
country.
He violate this promise, campaign pledge,
contract and accepted an application for reclaiming the Henoko sea.
This approval has no legitimacy.
At a press conference on
September 10, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga of the Abe administration showed his
recognition as follows:
“It was a top concern whether Okinawa
Prefectural government would approve the reclamation (of the coast at Henoko). Since the governor
approved it and construction has been carried out without making any
fuss, it is the issue of the past. It is not a point in dispute.”
Mr. Suga complacently
says that the “approval of application for reclamation” Mr. Nakaima gave is securely-authenticated.
However, since it is a fictitious bill and he knows about it very well,
he cannot carry out his promise.
In the 2010 gubernatorial election, Okinawa
residents clearly stated their will against relocation to Henoko.
People of Nago City in Okinawa Prefecture
have clearly demonstrated their will against relocation to Henoko four times in
the mayoral elections and municipal elections since 2010.
This is the will of Okinawa Prefecture
residents and Nago citizens. It is not
allowed to build a new U.S. base in Henoko, ignoring the will of sovereign.
However, it can be said that Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has committed a
blunder fatal to the Abe administration.
The blunder he committed is that he has given his word “approval of application for reclamation
by governor is everything.”
